As a therapist, I’ve noticed that many people with OCD tend to overlook their wellbeing while on the road to recovery.
Sure, they’re doing great with managing OCD symptoms, but they forget to look after themselves in the process. And here’s where the problem lies.
Trust me – OCD can return at a scarily fast rate when you’re feeling weak, making it crucial to prioritise your overall wellbeing.
But don’t stress; I’m here to help! In this article, I will share some daily tips to help you keep your stress levels low while keeping OCD in check. So, ready to bring some much-needed relaxation into your life? Let’s dive in…
Tip 1: Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake and avoiding smoking and recreational drugs can all contribute to lower stress levels and promote overall well-being.
Remember, reaching for chocolate, alcohol, or drugs to soothe OCD-related anxiety may provide temporary relief, but they can actually worsen mood, increase anxiety and depression in the long run.
Tip 2: Practise Relaxation Techniques
Incorporate relaxation techniques into your daily routine to reduce stress. Deep breathing, guided imagery, walking in nature, sound baths, massage and yoga are excellent examples.
These techniques all help activate your calming parasympathetic nervous system and promote relaxation.

Tip 3: Engage in Joyful Activities
Cultivating a positive mindset can significantly reduce stress levels. Start your day by focusing on things you’re grateful for, noting them down in the morning. At night, reflect on three positive things that happened during the day.
Daily positive affirmations also work wonders for maintaining a calming outlook. Just remember, consistency is key, just like going to the gym regularly to build muscles!
Tip 4: Take Regular Rest Breaks
Don’t forget to give yourself regular breaks and allow time to rest and recharge. When I’m super busy with no breaks, my adrenaline levels surge, leading to more intrusive thoughts.
This is why it’s essential to incorporate break times into our hectic lives. During these breaks, engage in activities that help you relax and unwind and make sure to put break reminders on your phone so they aren’t forgotten. Check out tip 2 for inspiration on relaxing activities.
Last words…
So remember, don’t forget to prioritise your overall well-being and keep your stress levels in check. Take care of yourself and enjoy those little pockets of relaxation throughout your day.
