In times of stress, many individuals turn to food as a coping mechanism and I’m here to say it’s not your fault. The comfort and distraction it provides can temporarily alleviate anxiety and emotional distress and can create a very strong habit. However, relying on food as a primary coping strategy can lead to excess weight gain, and a cycle of emotional eating. Understanding the reasons behind this behaviour is crucial in addressing it effectively. Read this article to find out the causes of stress eating and ways to overcome it.
Causes of Using Food as a Coping Mechanism:
Emotional Regulation: Studies like one from Trends in Cognitive Behaviour have shown that food consumption can trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. As a result, individuals may seek comfort in food to regulate their emotions and cope with stress. After all, they would prefer to feel pleasure than stress!
Social Conditioning: Many studies suggest that early experiences with food, such as using treats as rewards or comfort during childhood, can contribute to the development of emotional eating habits later in life. When babies or children are distracted with food when stressed this then becomes an ingrained habit carried through to adulthood.
Stress Response: Articles also indicate that chronic stress can disrupt the regulation of appetite hormones, leading to increased cravings for high-calorie, palatable foods as a means of stress relief. And so the cycle continues!
Strategies to Break the Cycle of Emotional Eating:
Mindful Eating: Practice mindfulness during meals by paying attention to hunger cues, savoring each bite, and being aware of emotional triggers that lead to overeating.
Identify Emotional Triggers: Keep a journal to track when and why you turn to food for comfort. Recognising patterns can help you develop alternative coping strategies. Perhaps there are certain times of the day when you feel most vulnerable.
Stress Management Techniques: Engage in stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, or hypnotherapy to alleviate stress and reduce the urge to eat emotionally. When you regularly turn to stress management techniques to release stress and not food, it will become the new healthy habit that you do automatically without thinking.
Seek Professional Help: Consult a doctor to see if there is any underlying medical reason for why you craving food all the time or feeling very stressed.
Nutritional Guidance: Work with a nutritionist or dietitian to develop a balanced eating plan that addresses nutritional deficiencies and supports overall well-being. Perhaps you are craving certain foods as you are intolerant to them, which is something you can also get checked out.
Build Healthy Coping Mechanisms: Replace emotional eating with alternative coping strategies such as exercise, hobbies, socializing, or seeking support from friends and family. Check out this earlier article I wrote detailing my recommended techniques to help you release stress – Get Your Calm On
Seek a Hypnotherapist
As I mentioned before emotional eating is a habit and all habits are stored in the subconscious mind. Through sessions of hypnosis, a hypnotherapist can help break this unwanted habit in your subconscious mind, helping to reduce unwanted emotional eating cravings and it’s much easier than relying on willpower alone to break this habit.
By understanding the underlying reasons for using food as a coping mechanism and implementing healthy strategies to address emotional eating, individuals can break free from this cycle and cultivate a positive relationship with food and stress management. Remember emotional eating is a habit that can be decommissioned with repetition.
