Hypnotherapy for Alcohol Dependence

Hi welcome to my blog this week, I will be writing about alcohol and how hypnotherapy is a great solution to help overcome unwanted drinking habits or alcohol dependence.

Dealing with excessive drinking can be tough, but you’re not alone and it’s great that you’re looking into hypnotherapy as a possible solution because it works! Over the past 15 years, I have used hypnosis to successfully help clients either moderate their drinking habits or stop drinking altogether.

Ready to hear more? Then let’s dive in and explore how the transformative power of hypnosis can help you find your way back to a healthier relationship with alcohol or remove it from your life altogether.

What is Hypnotherapy?

First things first, what exactly is hypnotherapy? Well, it’s a type of therapy that uses hypnosis to help you access your subconscious mind. Your deeply rooted beliefs, habits, and patterns are stored here. By tapping into your subconscious, hypnotherapy aims to reprogram your thoughts and behaviours, leading to positive changes in your life.

So, how does it work when it comes to excessive drinking? Well, hypnotherapy can target the underlying reasons behind why you rely on alcohol so much. It also addresses the emotional and psychological factors contributing to your drinking habits. Often, there are deep-rooted issues like stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, or past traumas that drive us to rely on alcohol as a coping mechanism too. Or it could be a simple belief that alcohol is needed to have fun at a social event, or some people rely on alcohol to give them confidence.

Once we have identified the programming within your subconscious that is perpetuating your drinking habit, through hypnosis, a trained hypnotherapist can help replace this programming with programming that frees you from the unwanted drinking habit. I invite you to read one of my recent case studies to find out more.

Case Study

Meet Michelle, a woman in her 50’s who wanted to stop drinking alcohol completely. She came to see me as she was easily polishing off a bottle of wine each night after a stressful day at work and even more so at the weekend when she was meeting up with friends. For her health she wanted this to stop!

During our consultation, I found out that firstly she was using alcohol as a way to get rid of stress, a bit like a child uses a baby’s dummy. The buzz from drinking wine helped distract her from feeling stressed from work and until now, she thought this strategy was working for her. She also associated drinking alcohol with having a good time.

Now there are two things wrong with these beliefs. One is that alcohol doesn’t solve her problems at work, yes it distracts her from her problems, but it also adds to her problems! Excessive drinking disrupted her sleep, affected her health, made her feel anxious the next day at work, and didn’t help her come any closer to solving the problems at work. So this strategy in her subconscious wasn’t helpful and was one of the reasons she couldn’t stop drinking on her own.

The second belief was that she needed alcohol to have a good time. This again is untrue. I helped her remember all the fun times she had at school or teenage years at parties before she discovered alcohol, and this was the proof she needed that it wasn’t alcohol making events more fun, the alcohol was just piggybacking the fun time she would have had without the alcohol.

Once we identified these unhelpful beliefs, I then used hypnosis to communicate with her subconscious that these beliefs were problematic and needed to be deleted as they were preventing Michelle from being alcohol-free which was her goal. After I deleted these beliefs from her subconscious mind, Michelle soon happily discovered that night, when she finished her stressful day’s work, the wine cravings had gone, along with the wine cravings at social events too!

As you can now see, hypnosis is a very effective tool in either moderating drinking or stopping it completely. Once you remove the unhelpful programming in your subconscious mind, it then removes the alcohol cravings, making stopping drinking alcohol far easier than using willpower alone.
